On stage, four women, the \u201cMarthes\u201d, inspired by ecofeminist movements, are studying the ways of building a family. Far from the analytical discourse that argues for \u201cthe irreducibility of a form of transmission [\u2026] that has a subjective constitution, implying a relationship to a desire that is not anonymous\u201d\u00a0[2], their project is to \u201cdecenter the place of the human,\u201d with \u201ccase studies, where animals challenge our ways of building families\u00a0[3].\u201d What does their creation teach us about the contemporary family discontent?<\/p>\n

Before examining ethology, they explore History. They bring to life a group of medieval peasants living in a household, then a 19th century bourgeois family with its patriarch ruling over women and children, followed by a 1990s family mostly concerned with the children\u2019s achievements and consumer-driven home improvement.<\/p>\n

We arrive in the 21st century, the era of each performer\u2019s own family. Their exchanges become intimate. But current events catch up with them: the \u201cbig orange, the American, Donald\u201d for whom \u201cthe return of American women to the stoves\u201d is necessary to \u201cmake America great again\u2026\u201d\u00a0[4]. This return of the pater familias<\/span><\/em>, who \u201chad a right of life and death over his wife and children,\u201d as they put it, depicts that \u201cthe father\u2019s disappearance\u201d\u00a0[5] observed by Lacan brings forth a real, jouissant father.<\/p>\n

Immediately afterward, a striking shift occurs with the arrival on stage of a termite queen. Sounds of jouissance, creeping, sighs, moans. A huge white garment, beautifully embroidered like a wedding dress \u2013 its beauty and finish sharply contrasting with the other accessories\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0barely veils the obscenity of the jouissance at stake. \u201cThe ultimate barrier, last defense against the Real, beauty, don\u2019t touch it!\u201d\u00a0[6], Lacan taught. \u201cBring me another one!\u00a0[7],\u201d the queen repeatedly screams. Another king to fertilize her, as she lays forty thousand eggs a day. Directly correlated with the emergence of the real father, on stage, the jouissance of the unbarred, all-mother springs up.<\/p>\n

The end of the play allows for a reading of its title, Family Vessel<\/span><\/em>. The Marthes board a sailboat \u2013 a metaphor for a family with an \u201calternative genealogy.\u201d The idea is to choose its members, including ancestors, \u201cso that the past does not impose itself on the present\u00a0[8].\u201d They leave the harbor (port) shouting the slogan: \u201cMake parents, not children!\u201d They had already departed the phallic \u201chaven\u201d (port)\u00a0[9], but this call for another kind of parenthood reveals a rejection of symbolic transmission, of desire and of the responsibility inherent to the family institution. Family and its discontents in the age of scientistic ideology.<\/p>\n
