With a week to go before plunging into \u2018\u2018Family and its discontents\u2019\u2019, the texts are abounding. The acceleration of productions on the road to the congress could make one\u2019s head spin, even give vertigo… In tune with contemporary language, we could say that the path is itself \u2018\u2018discontenting\u2019\u2019 [<\/span>malaisant<\/span><\/em>].<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, in the words of the younger generation, discontent permeates all domains, to the point where it has become an adjective. \u2018\u2018Discontenting\u2019\u2019 is used in all sorts of contexts, and has even found its way into dictionaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the words of many of the people who come into our consulting rooms and institutions, it is less a question of discontent <\/span>in<\/span><\/em> the family than of the family <\/span>causing<\/span><\/em> their discontent. Embarrassing, cumbersome, traumatic, violent: the family, \u2018\u2018discontenting\u2019\u2019!<\/span><\/p>\n

So let us resume our oriented path, strewn with scattered, disparate pebbles that lead, as in the famous tale, to the parental home and what nestles there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s a brief overview of each pebble in this F<\/span>a<\/span><\/em>mil. From Gide’s <\/span>Unwanted<\/span><\/em> to <\/span>lalangue<\/span><\/em>, Felix Rueda Soler examines the notion of transmission and the paths it takes, laden with the desire or non-desire of the parents towards the child.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>In the Fritzl case, no \u201cjouissance of substitution\u201d\u00a0[1]. Fatiha Sarah Belghomari highlights a family’s slide into the pure real, where the father establishes jouissance in the place of the master signifier.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his reading of the film <\/span>Little Miss Sunshine<\/span><\/em>, Marco Moretti goes on to show how – for an entire family – the failure of the Ideal allows the transition from the imaginary to the symbolic and therefore access to desire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through the film <\/span>La vita accanto<\/span><\/em>, Giuseppe Spatoliatore proposes an alternative outcome that would not go as far as a passage \u00e0 l\u2019acte. How can one trace a new rim to a hole in the real? <\/span><\/p>\n

A little further on, a few more pebbles. Fernando S\u00e1nchez Lanz develops the idea of shifting the impossible sexual relation to the natural imaginary mother-child relationship. At risk of the mother’s evaporation.<\/span><\/p>\n

When family transmission is doubled by a hereditary disease, how can one avoid reducing the child to the status of a sick being, an object trapped in the maternal fantasy? Gabriela Med\u00edn unfolds a possible answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, Fran\u00e7oise Labridy highlights the way in which Perrine Le Querrec’s writing maintains \u2018\u2018affiliation with the signifier of the intolerable and unspeakable\u2019\u2019 included in humanity. <\/span><\/p>\n

In today’s language, the counterpart of \u2018\u2018discontenting\u2019\u2019 is \u2018\u2018satisfying\u2019\u2019 – and not \u2018\u2018enjoyable\u2019\u2019[<\/span>jouissif<\/span><\/em>]! I hope that reading this F<\/span>a<\/span><\/em>mil will bring you more satisfaction than discontent.<\/span><\/p>\n
