\u201c<\/span>There is a family knowledge that sometimes<\/span> allows<\/span> a<\/span> f<\/span>ault<\/span> to be disguised<\/span>. It is extremely valuable because on the other hand, there are families that due to their internal economy, <\/span>so to speak, can, on the contrary, be extremely crime-promoting, <\/span>not<\/span> necessarily <\/span>willingly, <\/span>but because they <\/span>open up<\/span> the crack<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[1].<\/span><\/p>\n

This is precisely what the series <\/span>La Mes\u00edas<\/span> by the duo Javier Calvo and Javier <\/span>Ambrossi<\/span>, worthy heirs of Almod\u00f3var<\/span>,<\/span> bears witness to.<\/span> The formal inventiveness of the two filmmakers sets the scene for a gruesome family drama with a kitschy aesthetic, full of pop religiosity.<\/span>We follow the journey of a mother and her children over several decades. In the early years<\/span>, <\/span>the mother, <\/span>who is <\/span>entirely caught-up in the whirlwind of her own jouissance and convinced of her brilliant future, <\/span>struggles to take care of her two children, who live<\/span> in the wake of her chaos.<\/span> Her life takes a radical turn when she meets an Opus Dei fanatic who is as enigmatic as he is disturbing.<\/span> He drives<\/span> her to the very worst by triggering within her a mystical delirium imbued with fanaticism. Thence<\/span>, <\/span>they will form a cloistered family, cut off from the outside world. <\/span>The couple\u2019s many children, prisoners of this oppressive universe, <\/span>live under the thumb of these two <\/span>uncompromising<\/span> adults. Only the two eldest children, who were not born from this union, manage to extricate themselves from this family, which they end up rejecting completely.<\/span> However, nothing indicates that they have extricated themselves from their position as objects of their mother.<\/span> The series clearly demonstrates that distancing oneself from or rejecting one\u2019s family does not necessarily testify to an extraction of jouissance engendering<\/span> a subjective constitution that allows for <\/span>\u201cthe handling of the object of fantasy and liberates the jouissance <\/span>attached to the object <\/span>\u03b1<\/span> beyond the ph<\/span>a<\/span>llus, for a jouissance of life<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[2]. <\/span>Distancing oneself<\/span> or separating from one’s family is not necessarily rejecting it. <\/span><\/p>\n
